A 120-200 class excavator is only 100$ hr w operator, dozer is about 60-70$ hour for something like an 850 with 6 way and rippers through a contractor. I didn't say it was 40$ per hour, what I meant was dollar for dollar the contractors here will do more work than even a moderately skilled operator. Can you rent a scraper anywhere? One of our local NRCS has a scraper they rent out that I like to use to clean out terraces. But if its finish work, they do work good for that. They will not hog much dirt, just not enough weight. When you say your rebuilding them, are you just cleaning out around risers or actually moving much dirt. But they aren't a big dozer by any means. It worked really slick for what I needed, they are super fast being a hydrostat and the way the they operate. I rented a D5K a couple years ago, pretty sure at the time I paid $1300 for a week. Equivalent size dozer around here is $125 an hr.

$40 an hr? Really? You simply cant own and operate a reliable machine that will do a timely job for $40 an hr. Slowzuki- Your contractors must be hard up for work or they arent very good operators.
